A fan coil unit fcu is a device that uses a coil and a fan to heat or cool a room without connecting to ductwork. Indoor air moves over the coil which heats or cools the air before pushing it back out into the room. The air comes out of the fcu either cooler or hotter than before. As part of an hvac system found in residential commercial and industrial buildings a fan coil unit is often connected to ductwork and a thermostat to regulate the temperature of one or more spaces.

Owing to their simplicity and flexibility fan coil units can be more econ. A fan coil unit fcu contains a fan which draws the air in a space into the unit then blows it over a cooling or heating coil. They are used in some office buildings and shopping centres and typically specified where there are multiple small spaces requiring individual control. Fcus can be less expensive to install than ducted systems and are available in ceiling floor mounted and freestanding configurations.
